Bearded Tit 05
Bearded
tit
Panurus biarmicus
Also known as the
Bearded Reedling, this is a very elusive bird that I enjoyed
seeing and taking photographs. It must be one of the most
beautiful British birds. They have declined in numbers
in recent years, probably due to global cooling.
Norfolk, January 2008.

Much rarer and a bit scruffier than the Marsh Tit and without
a white band of follicles under the eye. Amazingly, they excavate the nest hole themselves and line it with hair and other fine threads, which you can see stuck on the tree and coming from a smaller nest hole by the bird's tail in this image. This tree stump must have been quite a challenge!
