Great Spotted Woodpeckers are very common throughout Britain yet evoke a sense of discovery and excitement to those who see one.  Why this is so I haven't fathomed yet but they are often depicted as the archetypal bird feeder bird!  These birds were photographed in the Forest of Dean at a feeding station I temporarily set up.
